TAIKO DRUMMING IN SCHOOLS

TAIKO: A PHYSICALLY SPACED, MENTALLY CONNECTED, STIMULATING ACTIVTY FOR ALL SCHOOL CHILDREN

Mark Alcock and other members of Taiko Meantime have held educational Taiko drumming workshops and projects since 1995, introducing thousands of children and young people to Taiko every year.

At the core of our workshops are rhythm, movement, teamwork, performance and FUN!

Many of our workshops have illustrated the potential of Taiko drumming to increase motivation and self esteem, benefiting pupils both personally and academically.

We’ve worked together with schools to identify just some of the benefits of Taiko to pupils’ personal development:

  • cultural awareness
  • confidence and self-worth
  • presentation skills
  • coordination
  • communication
  • trust
  • commitment
  • cooperation
  • having fun!

Our workshops fulfil many of the teaching aims within national curriculum subject areas including:

  • Music
  • Physical Education
  • Japanese language
  • Geography
  • Drama
  • Personal Development and Learning/PSHE
  • SMSC

Our approach fits well with the Assessment for Learning model, encouraging pupils to learn by being critical, reflective and drawing on their existing knowledge.

Because Taiko drumming links so many disciplines, there is great potential for making our visit a cross-curricular event at your school.

We cater for children and young people of all ages and can focus on one class or offer a mixture of workshops to suit different groups. From a single day of drumming to an extended programme over a number of weeks, and even assistance setting up your own Taiko drumming club, whatever your school’s requirements we can tailor our workshops and projects to bring out the best in your pupils.

AFTER-SCHOOL
TAIKO CLUBS

AFTER SCHOOL TAIKO CLUBS

BRINGING THE BENEFITS OF REGULAR TAIKO PRACTICE TO YOUR SCHOOL

A School Taiko club is a great way to give children regular access to the world of Taiko drumming. We can help you launch and maintain a school Taiko group in a number of ways. The benefits of having a school club stretch far and wide beyond the skill of drumming itself:

  • Self worth
  • confidence building
  • teamwork
  • musical development
  • physical confidence
  • control and coordination
  • insight into Japanese culture
  • belonging to a group

For the school, a Taiko club:

  • broadens the range of clubs on offer
  • provides a way to bring together both music and physical activity
  • promotes the school when your club goes out to perform in public

We can:

  • Supply you a set of quality school Taiko drums, stands and sticks
  • Kick off the club with a day of workshops or after-school Taiko sessions to promote Taiko to the children and parents
  • Lead the first few club sessions
  • Train one of your teachers to lead the club so that you can become self-sufficient
  • Make regular visits to your school club sessions for guidance in maintaining good standards, and while preparing for performances
  • Give your club leader all the creative support they will need for developing repertoire for the group

You’ll need:

  • Storage for the drums

Please contact us at clubs@taikomeantime.com or on 07958 949023 to discuss your requirements and prices.
